Yee Sang 魚生 101

Then on 1st day of CNY, we had a bigger crowd and more food to make and the star dish was the 魚生!
After researching online, I found a few recipes and decided to take bits and pieces of it to make my own 魚生.

The ingredients were:

  1. Radish
  2. Carrots
  3. Lettuce
  4. Raw or smoked salmon (be generous!! oh and any fish is fine as long as it is not too pungent)
  5. White sesame
  6. Roasted and chopped peanuts
  7. Plum sauce from Lee Kum Kei
  8. Grapefruit
  9. Longan (tin can)
  10. Japanese rice crackers
  11. Pringles Wasabi flavor!
  12. Lemon
  13. Chinese 5 spice powder 五香粉 (this was the missing ingredient as it was sold out in Sainsbury!)

As you can see, I made the recipe to suit my own taste bud. You can improvise the flavor to your own liking.
The main points are 'sweet and crunchy'!

  1. So the radish, carrot and lettuce are shredded using the vegetable shredder. (depends on the crowd size)
  2. Lightly pan fry the white sesame until its brown. (no oil needed)
  3. Peel and drain the excessive juice from the grapefruit. If it's too watery, the 魚生 might be too wet and soggy. (we used this as there is no pomelo here)
  4. Chopped the longan (this is optional)
  5. Sliced the salmon finely (make sure that it is enough for everyone. Don't be kiamsap on the beginning of the year!)
  6. The Japanese rice cracker and Pringles are crumbed into tiny pieces. (we used this for the crunchy factor. Substitute for prawn crackers)
  7. Once all this is done, get a nice big, wide plate and arrange the radish, carrot and lettuce as the base.
  8. Then put the grapefruit and longan around the vegetables. The salmon must be in the center. Squeeze the lemon on to the salmon.
  9. Lastly, sprinkle the crumbed rice crackers and Pringles, give a pinch of Chinese 5 spice and pour the plum sauce all around the 魚生. While doing this, remember to say auspicious greetings!
  10. It should be like this now.
  11. Then, everyone with their chopsticks and "lou" it all the way!!!

Oh and the answer to the sculptor was Christmas pudding....

For the CNY eve, we made a simple steamboat dinner with my housemates and Brown St peeps.

Sarah brought her Cranium and we had a go with it.
It is fun but somehow I feel too much thinking involved.
This reminded me of my 2009 CNY.
BBQ+IMU ppl (This time involving MARCUS CHOW!)+Pictionary.
That was crazy. haha.

This is the sculptor that Marc C made during one of the Cranium's task and I had to guess it.

Hint : things
I will reveal the answer on my next post. A word of advice, Marc C's artistic expression is alienistic.
